A House in Cradley

“A House in Cradley”
Christine Farmer, pen and ink drawing (12.5″ x 12.5″).
Cradley is the place where I grew up. Listed in the Domesday Book in 1086 as ‘Cradelei’, it expanded during the Industrial Revolution, becoming famous in particular for the production of chain. My grandmother, amongst her many jobs, made iron nails in a small workshop, and most of my family at one time or another, including myself, worked in the iron foundries. Despite the loss of much manufacturing, the smell of cast sand can still hang in the air.

As a child in the sixties and seventies I used to play in abandoned houses; something that would be frowned upon today but back then it just seemed natural and was immense fun. Along with exploring local waste-ground, and making maps of my explorations, these were some of my favourite things to do as a child. Half-demolished houses still have something of the fascination for me of dolls-houses, and this is something I’ll be exploring in my new work.
