The River Thames

The River Thames

“The River Thames”

Christine Farmer, pen and ink drawing (11″ x 9.5″).

The longest river entirely in England, the name ’Thames’ comes originally from a Celtic word which probably meant ‘dark’ or ‘the dark one’; a description which seems entirely appropriate when one gazes into the passing water. There is evidence of settlement along the banks of the Thames from at least Neolithic times, but the city of ‘Londinium’ was founded by the Romans under the Emperor Claudius. The individual studies are of the Houses of Parliament, and Battersea Power Station, but I think the real subject is the dark river itself.
